Hello Loves, Happy Monday!
This past weekend I attended the Spurs Silver Dancers, dance team for the San Antonio Spurs basketball team, mini reunion. Taught by the original director, the reunion kicked off with a dance class which was nothing short of amazing. Fast pace, high energy, the dance took me back to dancing on the court, and not to mention, my neck is still a little sore from the hair whips that I haven’t done in a couple years! The mixer portion happened later in the evening and gave the opportunity for ladies from every season to meet and mingle with each other. It was so surreal to meet woman that have represented the organization for the past 25 years.
So, what really happens behind the scenes of an NBA dance team? A huge time commitment, drilling physical work outs, late night practices, weigh ins, low pay, mental game of staying confident, you wonder, why do so many woman absolutely cherish this experience?
If you ask any former Silver Dancer if the experience is challenging, she will no doubt say yes. This journey was one of the most demanding, yet rewarding adventures I have taken part of.
Woman don’t go into dancing for the NBA to make money. The compensation comes in the form of life lessons and friendships that are made. The girls I have danced along side with are like sisters to me, my coach is like a mom, and the whole organization really is like family. It was the nights walking into practice after a long day of school, or work, and knowing for those couple hours I was going to do something I absolutely loved with girls that shared that same feeling. Laughs, tears, sweat, a lot sweat, hard work and passion bonded us together.
All the memories made during practice lead up to the ultimate reward, game day. You’re standing in the tunnel, lights off, crowd screaming, and you get the biggest adrenaline rush you could ever imagine. Although my very first home game was the most memorable, the feeling was the same, every single game. After the anticipation of waiting to run out, I got to my spot and would look up to the very top. The fans are so loud and you can feel their excitement and love for the team.
Dancing on the court gives you the feeling of accomplishment. It is the time to shine and you get to do it with your best girlfriends.
Dancing in the NBA was an experience of a lifetime. Putting on the uniform and saying “I am a Silver Dancer” were such proud moments. I truly feel blessed to have rocked the silver and black and been apart of such a legendary organization.
The Silver Dancers just had their new team auditions this past weekend and I couldn’t be more excited for the girls that are starting their journey into the family. Stay humble, be bold, and never lose sight of how truly blessed you are to be wearing that uniform. You will meet some of your best friends and make the most unforgettable memories.
